The Korean 10-Step Skincare Routine, Explained

The Korean 10-step skincare routine is a layering method that applies products from thinnest to thickest texture: oil cleanser, water cleanser, exfoliator, toner, essence, serum, sheet mask, eye cream, moisturiser and SPF. You do not need all ten steps every day. Most people build a simpler four to five step version and add the rest when their skin needs it.

At Wee Ghost Beauty, Scotland's dedicated Korean skincare store, we help people find the steps that suit their own skin rather than following all ten by rote. Here is what each step does and how to choose products for it.

What is the Korean 10-step skincare routine?

The 10-step routine is a Korean approach to skincare built around gentle, gradual layering. Instead of a few heavy products, it uses several lightweight layers so the skin stays hydrated and the barrier stays healthy. The order matters: each step prepares the skin for the next.

The 10 steps, explained

1. Oil cleanser

An oil-based cleanser dissolves makeup, sunscreen and excess sebum. This is the first half of the "double cleanse". Try an oil or balm cleanser on dry skin, massage, then rinse.

2. Water cleanser

A gentle water-based cleanser removes sweat, dirt and anything the oil cleanser left behind. Together these two steps clean thoroughly without stripping the skin.

3. Exfoliator

Used two to three times a week, not daily, an exfoliator clears dead skin cells so the rest of your routine absorbs better. AHAs work on surface texture and brightness; BHAs go into the pores and suit oily or blemish-prone skin.

4. Toner

A Korean toner is hydrating, not stripping. It rebalances the skin after cleansing and preps it to absorb the next layers.

5. Essence

An essence is a lightweight, watery layer of concentrated hydration and active ingredients. It is often described as the heart of a Korean routine.

6. Serum or ampoule

This is your targeted treatment step: vitamin C for brightness, retinol for fine lines, niacinamide for tone, snail mucin for repair. Ampoules are simply more concentrated serums.

7. Sheet mask

Used a couple of times a week, a sheet mask floods the skin with a single concentrated dose of hydration or actives. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes.

8. Eye cream

The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate. A dedicated eye product hydrates this area and targets puffiness or fine lines.

9. Moisturiser

A moisturiser seals in every layer underneath and strengthens the skin barrier. Choose a lighter gel for oily skin or a richer cream for dry skin.

10. SPF (mornings only)

Sunscreen is the single most important anti-ageing step. Korean SPFs are loved for lightweight textures and no white cast. Look for SPF50+ and PA++++ for the highest protection. This step is for your morning routine; at night you swap it for a richer treatment.

Do I really need all 10 steps?

No. The 10 steps are a menu, not a checklist. A simple, effective routine for most people is: water cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser and SPF in the morning, with an oil cleanse and a treatment added at night. Introduce one new product at a time and give your skin two weeks to adjust before adding another.

A simple starter routine

Morning: water cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser, SPF.
Evening: oil cleanser, water cleanser, toner, treatment serum, moisturiser. Add an exfoliator or sheet mask two to three times a week.

Frequently asked questions

What order do you apply Korean skincare?

Apply from thinnest to thickest texture: cleanse first, then toner, essence, serum, moisturiser, and finish with SPF in the morning. Watery products go before creamy ones so each layer can absorb.

How long should I wait between steps?

Around 30 seconds to a minute, just long enough for each layer to absorb. You do not need to wait for products to dry completely; applying the next step on slightly damp skin can help with hydration.

Is Korean skincare good for sensitive skin?

Yes. The gentle, layered approach and the focus on soothing ingredients like centella asiatica (cica) and panthenol make Korean skincare a popular choice for sensitive and reactive skin. Always patch test a new product first.

Can I do the routine if I only have a few minutes?

Yes. A four-step routine of cleanser, toner, moisturiser and SPF covers the essentials. The extra steps are there for when your skin wants more.
